What Are the Section 179 Limitations?

Section 179 limitations impose depreciation caps on vehicles based on their weight and class. To qualify, vehicles must be used at least 50% for business. Luxury cars under 6,000 lbs. are capped at $18,000, while SUVs and crossovers over 6,000 lbs. are capped at $25,000, unless bonus depreciation is applied, which removes the cap. Pickups and vans over 6,000 lbs. with no rear passenger seating have no cap. If Section 179 or bonus depreciation is used, standard mileage rates can’t be applied, and actual costs must be tracked.
